After the Comic:
If you ever watched One Step Beyond, you probably noticed that it felt a lot like The Twilight Zone. But here is a little television history: One Step Beyond premiered in January 1959, several months before The Twilight Zone arrived in October of that same year.
Both shows took viewers into strange worlds filled with ghosts, unexplained events, and things that made you wonder what was waiting in the dark. The Twilight Zone often used science fiction and fantasy, while One Step Beyond presented many of its stories as unusual events that might have actually happened.
My Bootleg Comic is based on the episode The Captain’s Guests. A married couple moves into an old seaside house and soon discovers that the captain’s portrait hanging on the wall may be more than just decoration. Strange things begin happening, and before long, the couple realizes that the captain might still believe he is in command!
Naturally, I had to put myself in the middle of it. In my version, the captain is not just haunting the house—he is looking for a job! When that picture starts rattling and those ghostly visitors appear, I do what any sensible man would do: run first and ask questions later!
Because if a picture on my wall starts talking, I’m not calling an art dealer. I’m calling a moving company!
