My Favorite Sci-Fi Review...."The War of the Worlds" 1953

After the Comic: The War of the Worlds (1953)

My quiet little sci-fi review got out of hand fast. One minute I’m writing notes, and the next Gene Barry and Ann Robinson are warning me that Martian war machines are outside the window. By the time those green beams started flying, I decided mailing the review was safer than finishing it.

The 1953 The War of the Worlds was produced by George Pal, directed by Byron Haskin, and starred Gene Barry as Dr. Clayton Forrester and Ann Robinson as Sylvia Van Buren. The movie updated H. G. Wells’ 1898 story from Victorian England to modern-day California and became one of the defining science-fiction films of the 1950s. Its special effects won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects.

Little-known fact: Paramount had owned the movie rights to Wells’ novel since 1925, and several earlier attempts to film it never made it to the screen before George Pal finally got the project made decades later.

And here’s another nice connection: Gene Barry and Ann Robinson later appeared briefly in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 War of the Worlds.

Now for the movie (I didn't shorten this one).....
