The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fix my Fence and Then Fight a Dragon!!

After the Comic:

Day of the Dragon

Well, the Lone Ranger and Tonto fixed my fence—but when I showed them the lumber bill, Silver suddenly became the fastest horse in the West! I guess even a masked hero knows when it’s time to yell, “Hi-Yo, Silver—get us out of here!”

Day of the Dragon comes from the colorful 1966 animated version of The Lone Ranger. It was the third story shown in the program’s second episode and originally aired on CBS on September 17, 1966. The series placed the Lone Ranger and Tonto in unusual adventures involving strange inventions, mysterious villains and science-fiction ideas—almost like The Wild Wild West in cartoon form.

The Lone Ranger was voiced by Michael Rye, Tonto by Shepard Menken, and Marvin Miller supplied the powerful opening narration. Vic Schoen composed the music and arranged the familiar William Tell Overture. The program was produced by Format Films, with much of its distinctive artwork created by Halas and Batchelor in London.

The series produced 26 half-hour programs containing 78 separate adventures and ran on CBS Saturday mornings from 1966 until 1969. Its dark backgrounds, textured artwork and unusual “weird Western” stories made it look different from most Saturday-morning cartoons of its time.

So pull up a chair, grab the popcorn and keep an eye on the window. The Lone Ranger and Tonto are back—but if you have a repair job waiting, hide the lumber bill!

Now get ready for The Lone Ranger: Day of the Dragon!
