Big Hoss (Bonanza), Gold, and a Little Leprechaun Trouble (1963)

After the Comic

Well, BJ and Hoss found gold, got three wishes, and still somehow managed to turn it into a mess. That sounds about right for Hoss Cartwright.

Dan Blocker played Eric “Hoss” Cartwright on Bonanza, and he became one of the show’s most beloved characters because Hoss was big, strong, gentle, funny, and usually the first one to believe something everybody else thought was impossible. That made him the perfect Cartwright for a story involving leprechauns and buried gold.

A few things you may not know about Dan Blocker: he was about 6-foot-4, served in the Korean War, and worked as a schoolteacher before becoming a television star. He also earned a master’s degree in dramatic arts and had been pursuing further studies before acting took over his career.

And there really is a Bonanza episode called “Hoss and the Leprechauns.” It originally aired on December 22, 1963, during Season 5.

So our Bootleg Comic version added one extra ingredient: BJ getting three wishes and learning that too much gold can be almost as much trouble as none at all.

Now get ready for Bonanza, Hoss Cartwright, a mysterious little leprechaun, and enough gold to make everybody on the Ponderosa lose their minds.

Next up: “Hoss and the Leprechauns.”
